In this project I will examine the variations in English accents across the United Kingdom.
After spending a semester in England, I could recognize differences in accents in various regions. I have chosen a few regions from which to analyze vowels and compare the formants from each region.Below are the sound files I used to extract each vowel sound. These files were downloaded from the International Dialects of English Archive. Two passages are used which contain some representation of every vowel sound in the English language. This is a very abbreviated study, using only five accents and four vowel sounds in the analysis. Further studies would need to be done for a more definitive analysis of regional accent differences.
England 72 England 72 is a white female, born in 1983 and university educated. She was raised in North London.
England 24 England 24 is a white male in his 20s, born in Grimsby and raised in Darlington.
England 57 England 57 is a white male, born 1951 in Leeds and raised in West Yorkshire.
Wales 5 Wales 5 is a white male, born 1989 in East Glamorgan, South Wales.
Scotland 10 Scotland 10 is a female student, born 1979 and raised in Glasgow.
Once accent files were downloaded from IDEA, I cut a sampling of each vowel sound (eh, ee, oo and uh) from the passage read by each person. I tried to get about 1 second of samples for each vowel. Then, I opened these new files in SonaMatch on SonaSource to create the charts and complete my analysis.
