Violin Acoustics

The Basics:

The violin is a very complex instument that is a part of the violin famiy and is the highest pitched. It has two major parts to it's construction: the body, which is the acoustic amplifier and the strings which are attached to the neck with tuning pegs to the tail piece and attached with the bridge.

The Parts:

The Body- made out of a hollow wooden box where the sound resonates

The Neck- comes up from the top of the body to hold the strings

The Strings- attached from a bridge at the bottom of the body to the head with pegs

The Bridge- holds the strings at the base of the violin and transfers energy from the stings to the body

F Holes- the only cut outs on each side of the body in the shape of an "f" and create a cavity resonance

The Bow- moves over the strings back and forth to produce sound
