IP addresses

Purpose

Preparation

Review the readings we have done and your classroom notes. Use a search engine to find at least two reliable pages which give information about the structure of IP addresses and to find at least one Web page which will tell you the IP address of the machine from which you retrieve the page.

The Tasks

Using Word, type your answers to the following questions.
  1. Using APA "works cited" format, give the information about the three (or more) pages you are using to do this assignment.
  2. From a computer on campus, use one of the sites you found above to determine your IP address. What is it?
  3. Try another computer on campus. Do you get the same address?
  4. Try an off-campus computer; home, work, or the public library. What computer did you use? What is the reported IP address of that computer?
  5. Find a page which defines the difference between Class A, Class B, and Class C domains. Which do you think we have at B-W? How do you know?
  6. Based on your decision about the class of our BW domain, how many different IP addresses can we have on campus? Explain your answer.
  7. Can you tell if we have a "dedicated IP address" or a "shared" one? If so, how?

Deliverables

Hand in your typed answers to these questions to the drop box by the beginning of the class period on the due date.
