Annual Business Meeting Minutes

November 23, 2002

New Orleans, LA

 Attendance:  49 members were in attendance. The members attending and their email addresses are attached.

 I.                    Call to Order

Sally Vogl-Bauer, the current chair, called the 2002 IDD business meeting to order at 2:00 p.m.  New members were welcomed.

II.                 Introduction of Officers

Sally introduced current officers of the IDD division: Past Chair, Scott Myers, West Virginia University, Chair Sally Vogl-Bauer, University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, Vice Chair Kelly Rocca, St. Johns University, Vice Chair Elect Derek Lane, University of Kentucky, and Secretary Mary Toale, Baldwin-Wallace College. 

III.               Approval of 2001 IDD Business Meeting Minutes (Atlanta)

The minutes from the 2001 Seattle conference prepared by Secretary Tasha Souza were approved with minor corrections.

IV.              Election of New Officers

Tim Mottet was introduced as Chair of the Nominating Committee. Sally thanked Tim and his committee members, Rhonda Knox and Trudy Hanson, for their work in putting the ballot together.

All nominated committee members in attendance stood and introduced themselves to those in attendance.

Tim Mottet asked for nominations from the floor. There were none and nominations were closed. Ballots were distributed and members voted. Tim Mottet and the nominating committee members counted the ballots.

V.                 Reports

A. PAST CHAIR’S REPORT

From the Legislative Council

1.      Publishing our journals: NCA entered into a publishing agreement with Taylor and Francis “Routledge” will be making communication journals available online, including access to past issues (from 1914 to current)

2.      EBSCO Host: NCA entered into a database compilation agreement with EBSCO Host

3.      Constitutional and Bylaw changes: Did not pass-61%, but needed 67% to pass. Only about 25% NCA members voted. LC will revisit this issue.

4.      Other information:

Sally acknowledged Kelly for taking over and planning New Orleans

 

C. VICE CHAIR’S REPORT

-         32/42 Papers (76% acceptance)

-         10/18 panels (55% acceptance)

-         All 19 requested time slots were granted.

-         Kelly thanked the panel readers: Trudy Hansen, Chad Edwards, Diane Millette

-         Kelly thanked the paper readers: Pam Cooper, Danette Ifert-Johnson, Derek Lane, Melissa Wanzer, Jon Stone

Kelly Rocca presented Top Paper Awards:

o    Top Student Paper awarded to Marian L. Houser, University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Her paper was entitled, "They Have No Idea What I Need. An Investigation of Nontraditional Student Expectations of Instructor Communication Behavior."

o    Top Paper awarded to Timothy P. Mottet, Southwest Texas State University, Matthew M. Martin, West Virginia University, Scott A. Myers, West Virginia University.  Their paper was entitled, "Students' Motives for Communicating with their Instructors: Considering Perceived Instructor Use of Verbal Approach/Avoidance Relational Strategies."

o    Top Two Paper awarded to Mary B. McPherson, California State University, Long Beach, Patricia Kearney, California State University, Long Beach, Timothy G. Plax, California State University, Long Beach. Their paper was entitled, "The Dark Side of Instruction: Teacher Anger as Classroom Norm Violations."

o    Top Three Paper was awarded to Amy M. Bippus, California State University, Long Beach, Patricia Kearney, California State University, Long Beach, Timothy G. Plax, California State University, Long Beach, Catherine F. Brooks, California State University, Long Beach. Their paper was entitled "Teacher Access and Mentoring Abilities: Predicting the Outcome Value of Extra Class Communication."

o    Top Four Paper awarded to Kathleen S. Ellis, University of Colorado, Colorado Springs. Her paper was entitled, "The Links Among Perceived Teacher Confirmation Behavior, Students' Actual Perceived Confirmation, Affective Learning, and Cognitive Learning."

Kelly acknowledged and thanked Sally Vogl-Bauer and Scott Myers for all of their help and work for IDD. She presented Sally with a plaque for outstanding service to the division.

D. VICE CHAIR-ELECT’S REPORT

-         Derek introduced the 2003 NCA conference in Miami Beach (Nov. 19-23) to all members. He attended the planning meeting.  The theme is Reaching Out, Reaching In and Isa Engleberg is the planner. 

-         Derek told all members that the paper and panel proposals deadline is February 15, 2003 (changed from the February 1 deadline) and that the convention planning would be taking place online. All panels, papers, posters would be submitted online through NCA. However, hard copy submissions should still be sent.

-         Derek stated that 18 slots (or more) would be available for IDD programs, allocated by unit membership. 

-         Derek announced that Dawn Braithwaite is in charge of pre-conferences at next year’s convention.  Any ideas for pre-conferences, and in particular cross-division panels, are welcome (dbraithwaite@unl.edu).

-         Derek asked for volunteers to read, respond, and/or chair panels.

D.     SECRETARY’S REPORT

Mary announced the website address of the IDD newsletter: http://homepages.bw.edu/~mtoale/nca/iddhome.htm

            Further discussion regarding web maintenance will be held until new business.

VI.              Old Business

A. Scott Myers discussed the changes to the IDD Bylaws and Constitution. He asked members to discuss what should be in it.

-         Recommendation was made to have a pocket card of standing rules.

-         Jim McCroskey stated that there should be established standards for elections

-         Ann Bainbridge-Frymier also asked how long each person is in office

-         Derek Lane mentioned formalization of how long and procedures for nominating

-         Ann stated it is not in bylaws-and would need 2/3rd vote to change it, but need WRITTEN policy.

-         Jim suggested election rules need to be in the bylaws so authority is clear, perhaps use resolution through minutes

-         Pat Kearney supported the morality or majority terms need to be spelled out and perhaps vote on it next year

-         Voting issues were also raised in regard to electronic or hard copy ballot

B. Minutes of meetings archive: Mary will begin to archive them online. Any past minutes should be forwarded to Mary (mtoale@bw.edu) for posting online.

VII.            Passing of Gavel

Sally thanked Scott and the Executive Board and thanked members of IDD and passed the gavel to Kelly.

VIII.         New Business

A.    Communication Education Report

1. The January 2003 edition

Don’s vision is to expand breadth and diversity of the journal: to expand readers and authors to include K-12, Training and Development

2. Two boards: Advisory board: special issues needed, etc

                         Review board

3. Two special issues in his editorship:

Hendrix and Jackson co-editing one: Diversity: negotiating identity in the classroom. Looking for articles that combine theoretical with the applied. Deadline of Jan. 15, 2003 call or email her (khendrix@memphis.edu)

                                    Deanna Dannels editing the other: Communication across the curriculum

                        4. Status: 90 manuscripts = 10 % acceptance

    Book review section being revitalized to include 2-4 reviews/issue: call for

    reviews and book review editors

   Also, a scholarship of teaching and learning section: still trying to define this.

B.     Other New Business

Webmaster discussion-Mary Toale agreed to continue as NCA IDD webmaster unless other arrangements are made for hosting the NCA IDD newsletter.

Ann Bainbridge-Frymier suggested talking to NCA for web space.

Basic Course Division request: please respond to survey online

            Announcement: student at risk commission looking for members

            Kathleen Galvin, chair of Ed. Policy Board stated that NCA’s Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ’s) are on the website and piloting possibly a set of syllabi available online. You may get a notice from EPB asking for a copy of syllabi to post.
