CHAIR’S REPORT

REPORT ON LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL

Scott Myers discussed legislative council and asked Don Boileau to continue the report.  Don discussed a new journal that will be focused on critical cultural studies (as one of three of the inquiry based journals).  When one joins NCA, he/she will have a choice of an inquiry based journal.

NCA is revising the bylaws and the constitution and there will be a dues increase.  Don explained that if the changes to NCA bylaws and constitution pass, IDD will need to change their bylaws as well.

The committee on committees will be expanded to 16.

The Educational Policy Board is changing from 5 to 6 members.

VICE CHAIR’S REPORT

Sally thanked her panel readers: Lori Carrell, Jill Rudd, and Felicia Jordan-Jackson.  Thirteen panels were submitted and ten were accepted.

Sally thanked her paper readers: Kelly Rocca, Chad Koermer, Erid Waldhart, John Stone, and Keith Weber.  Thirty seven papers were submitted and 28 were panelled.

Sally acknowledged Scott Myers for all of the work he has done for IDD. She presented him with a plaque for outstanding service to the division.

Sally discussed the difficulty with the rapid review process for other divisions and thanked the division for their patience.

VICE CHAIR-ELECT’S REPORT

Scott Myers explained that he would be doing the report with Sally because the Vice Chair Elect (Jennifer Waldeck) could not fulfill her role and stepped down.  Scott had agreed to be the planner for the 2002 convention to fill in for the Vice Chair Elect.  If a person is voted to replace J. Waldeck, he or she can take over but the papers will be sent to Scott.

Scott passed around the sign-up for chairing panels and encouraged graduate students to sign-up for chair positions as a way to get them involved in the division.

Sally Vogl-Bauer introduced the 2002 NCA conference in New Orleans (Nov. 21-24) to all members. She attended the planning meeting.  The theme is Communication in Action and Judy Pearson is the planner.  She discussed the possibilities for connections with the theme.

Scott reminded all members that papers and panel proposals must be received by February 1, 2002 and faxes and email submissions will not be accepted.  Five hard copies must be submitted.

Sally stated that 18 or 19 slots will be available for IDD programs.  There will be no electronic submission process.  She recommended that everyone think twice before requesting  PowerPoint because it is quite expensive.  She requested that IDD members contact program planners early with AV needs.

Scott requested that when submitting papers for the 2002 conference, please indicate if the paper is a student or debut paper.

VI.              Old Business

Scott Myers discussed the changes to the IDD Bylaws and Constitution.  They were mostly stylistic changes.  He removed the section regarding two committees abolished years ago.  He added Vice Chair as a three-year commitment.  The only committee at this point is the nominating committee.

Scott informed members that there is now a notebook that is passed from Vice Chair to Vice Chair.

Scott asked members to consider the cash award that are given to top papers.  These award amounts aren’t provided anywhere in writing.  He wondered if these cash awards were a wise use of the money ($100  top paper, $75 second paper, $50 third paper, and $50 for top student paper)

Scott wanted feedback on issues related to the newsletter.  He described how the secretary is traditionally expected to pick up the cost for creation and distribution of the newsletter.  This expectation is not always feasible.  In addition, the newsletter usually comes out in October and he would like to see it sent out sooner.  The newsletter could be put on the web and sent out electronically.  Scott was unaware that members of the division had received an electronic newsletter in October.  Pam Cooper suggested that the newsletter continue to be distributed electronically.  She proposed that a small group of people work on these changes.

VII.           New Business

Vice Chair Sally Vogl-Bauer asked members for their assistance with instructional materials soon to be provided on the NCA website.  She requested that people contact her if they are interested in compiling this information.

 VIII.         Announcements

Don Boileau discussed that there is no focus on communication education in  pre K –12.  He discussed the difficulty of getting teaching-oriented papers accepted and passed around a petition to start an interest group

Steven Beebe thanked all IDD members who were nominated and included on the 2002 ballot, and announced the winners of the election.

Vice-Chair Elect: Derek Lane

Secretary: Mary Toale

Nominating Committee:  Timothy Mottet (chair), Trudy Hanson, and Ronda Knox

Kathleen Galvin, Northwestern University, stated that they needed strategies for providing information on the NCA website regarding NCA’s Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ’s).  She will be meeting with people to develop this:

Don Rubin, Editor Elect of Communication Education, gave his report on Communication Education.  He plans to continue the tradition of publishing the best scholarship in instructional communication.  He informed the members that J. Ayres has one more issue to fill.   There is an outreach program focused on getting our scholarship into interdisciplinary hands and invite them to publish in CE as well.  He encouraged IDD members to give information about Communication Education to others and passed around a flyer.  There will be a new Scholarship of Teaching and Learning section; he asked Ann Darling, Associate Editor of the STL section, to report.

Ann Darling, Associate Editor of the new Scholarship of Teaching and Learning section of Communication Education, encouraged people to submit and defined the scholarship of teaching and learning.  She asserted that this is an exciting opportunity and briefly described STL in other disciplines.

Pam Cooper announced that the NCA K-12 books are completed.

Timothy Mottet thanked Steven Beebe and the committee for putting together a fine ballot.

Bob Freezel warned members that we have a possibility of loosing our K-12 division and discussed  the value of this division.

 IX.              Meeting Adjourned

The IDD business meeting adjourned with a motion from Pam Cooper and a second from Tasha Souza with all members in favor at 3:15.

Respectfully submitted,

Tasha Souza, 2001 IDD Secretary
