VICE
CHAIR-ELECT’S REPORT
Sally
Vogl-Bauer introduced the 2001 NCA
conference in Atlanta to all members. The theme of the 2001 conference is
“Radical(izing) Roots” and the conference will be held at the Marriott
Marquis and Atlanta Hilton, November 1-4, 2001. Room rates are approximately
$125.00 for single occupancy and $155.00 for double occupancy. Sally reminded
all members that papers and panel proposals must be received by February 1, 2001 and faxes and email submissions will
not be accepted.
Sally
recommended that in keeping with the conference theme, members focus on the
“historical perspectives” of our research. She also mentioned that
conference planners are recommending that no individual submit more than one
first-authored piece to the same division, and one author (for both paper and/or
poster submissions) must commit to attending the conference as a way to reduce
no-shows.
In
terms of poster sessions, a location in Atlanta is being considered where
participants can assemble their posters once they arrive at the conference, and
cash awards will be offered to the top poster presenters as a way to encourage
more poster submissions. When submitting papers for the 2001 conference, please
indicate in your cover letter if you are willing to present your paper as a
poster.
Sally
suggested the following panel ideas and offered her assistance in putting them
together:
o
“Life After Tenure”: Rather
than focusing on how to get tenure, focus on life after tenure. “What can we
do to keep the fires burning or to enrich our careers?”
o
On-Line Instructional Programs:
Review of Blackboard, Web CT and other on-line platforms. “How should we be
using it?” “Those who are using it well, and have their hands dirty, what
are you doing? What have you learned?”
o
Assessment: How do we assess
communication competence? How do we assess communication competence in basic
course? How do we assess communication majors?
Sally
distributed a sign-up sheet asking members to volunteer as chairs and
respondents for the 2001 conference. Sally encouraged graduate students to
sign-up for chair positions as a way to get them involved in the division.
Sally
completed her report by discussing the on-line “rapid review” process.
Twenty-three divisions have been identified for a pilot study for the Atlanta
conference.
Pam
Cooper, Northwestern University,
asked Sally to consider a way to collect data (or to dialogue) on the role of
respondent effectiveness. Pam suggested that we obtain data from panel members
on the effectiveness of respondent feedback. Specifically, “how important is
my feedback? Does my feedback work for you?” Pam suggested that it would be
nice to know if our feedback remains useful. It was suggested that respondents
email presenters asking them for feedback. Sally followed up by suggesting that
this might make a nice panel submission and suggested that this query be
forwarded to legislative council for their consideration.

o

o
