A Message from the Vice Chair: David Roach

Greetings from the Instructional Development Division! We have an exciting slate of panels for the upcoming 2004 NCA Convention in Chicago (November 11-14) and hope to see you all there. The theme of the convention this year is “Moving Forward/Looking Back.” We had a wonderful group of reviewers this year who did a great job evaluating all of our IDD submissions. Overall, 55 papers were competitively reviewed and 44 of these were chosen for programming (acceptance rate = 80%). Ten out of twenty-five submitted panel sessions were programmed, for a panel acceptance rate of 40%. You can browse through a complete list of all IDD sessions by going to http://convention.allacademic.com/nca2004/division.html and clicking on the Instructional Development Division section. If you have a paper or panel on the IDD program list, you need to remember to email or mail a copy of your paper to the chair and respondent of your session before the convention.

As you know, this year NCA planners asked all units to program a percentage of their sessions as special Discussion Panels. If your paper panel was programmed as a special Discussion Panel, you will see a bold print note at the top of your program listing on the NCA convention page. If your session has this special Discussion Panel designation, you will need to upload an abstract or your paper into the system so that people coming to your session can read your materials before the convention and come to your session ready to discuss. Instructions for how to do this were sent out by allacademic on October 7th. If you did not receive these instructions, you can check with Sarah Kincaid in the NCA office or email me and I will forward the instructions I received to you.

Let me encourage you to attend and support our Instructional Development Division sessions at the conference. We have some very interesting and thought-provoking IDD panels. You will want to mark your program for our Top Four Paper Panel (Saturday, 9:30 a.m.) and our Top Four Student Paper Panel (Friday, 8:00 a.m.). Also, don’t forget to mark your schedule and reserve time to attend our IDD Business Meeting on Saturday at 12:30 p.m.

Chicago in November—what a great place and time for a great convention! See you soon.
