National Communication Association

A Message from the Chair: Derek Lane
On behalf of the Instructional Development Division, I would like to thank everyone in advance for supporting the division and participating in what promises to be an excellent convention in Chicago as we celebrate the 90th Anniversary of the National Communication Association.
The papers and panel discussions competitively programmed at this year’s convention are theoretically interesting, methodologically sound, and pragmatically exciting. Topics vary in scope from communication skills training, scale development and assessment, to computer-assisted instruction, mentoring, instructional theory development, and coping with the challenges of large lecture courses—to name just a few. The 2004 convention affords us several opportunities to plan for our future as we reflect on our past to improve our teaching and share our research.
I would like express my appreciation to Kelly Rocca, the past chair of IDD, for her dedication to our division. I am very grateful to have worked with her throughout my tenure as Vice Chair and Chair of IDD. For this year's conference we owe a substantial debt of gratitude to David Roach for his tireless efforts as the IDD Vice Chair—arguably the most demanding position on the IDD Executive Board. I am especially appreciative of his enthusiasm and competence and value his time and commitment to making this convention one we will all remember.
In closing, I would like to encourage everyone to attend our business meeting on Saturday from 12:30 – 1:45 in the International Ballroom South, Second Floor of the Chicago Hilton, as we will be voting for the future officers of IDD and sharing updates of the Division’s work. Your input and contributions are what will continue to be the backbone of the division!
I look forward to seeing you at the convention in Chicago as we celebrate NCA’s 90th Anniversary!
-Derek Lane
