Question
Does it matter how large or small a practice room is, and does it have an impact on the sound?
Have you ever wondered why the sound of a saxophone changes depending on where you are playing? I have.The main objective of this experiment is to find out why the sound changes, and also to find out why the pitch changes. This project is important to me because I have been playing the saxophone since 7th grade and this is an oppurtunity to play my instrument around campus. To test the differences, I am going to play a song in each room and record the sound using Audacity. I will compare the difference of the tone quality, pitch , and the overall sound of the instrument.
For my project, I plan to study the room acoustics in a large conservatory practice room, a smaller practice room in the conservatory, and outside to test the difference in tone quality and pitch. First, I will set up Audacity on my laptop and tune my saxophone with a concert Bb scale. In order for this experiment to work I will need to be consistent with how the sound is. Next, I will test the reflections by popping a balloon near the starting point of the space in use. In order for the balloon pop to work, I will have to set up a microphone close enough to catch the sound waves and put another microphone a certain distance away to test how long the sound takes to travel. The data from the three different locations will be compared to find out what room, or area, is better for playing a saxophone in.
