In their book "Experiencing Music Technology" David Williams and Peter Webster define music technology very broadly, including under that term "computers and all of the music and non-music peripherals that are needed to perform music tasks with computers"(EMT, page xix). A quick perusal of their book indicates that all aspects of the electronic technology developments of the past 20 years (computers, email, World Wide Web, MIDI and MIDI-related hardware and software, etc.) must become part of the life of 21st Century musicians.

While this definition may seem to be too broad in scope, it can actually be reduced to the following category types. If you are interested in acquiring general information about these types of technology and/or the various subject areas within these types click on TYPES OF TECHNOLOGY in the navigation field at the left of this page. You will also find information on commercial products related to these technology types.
