Binaural Beats

Proposal Outline Resources

With my project, I want to ask the question of ‘How Binaural Beats work and also how they are similar and also different to monaural beats.’ I chose to research Binaural beats because I found the concept of them to be very interesting. I had found out that they, along with Monaural beats, are used for things such as stress reduction, pain management and relaxation, among others. The interesting thing about binaural beats is that the phenomenon that takes place is that of a third beat being heard, when only two tones are being presented. This is such a phenomenon because, with headphones on, two tones of different frequencies are presented at the same time, one in each ear, and one’s brain (or more specifically, the sound processing part of one’s brain) hears these tones and perceives there to be a fluctuating third tone, or beat. Monaural beats, although similar to binaural beats, present two tones at the same time, with out headphones on and beating can be heard because of the differences in the two tone’s frequencies. I plan on making my own examples of monaural beats and also binaural beats by using Csound.
