The purpose of this study is to gage the tonal variance between different kinds of trumpet mutes. Many different trumpet players use many different brands of the same type of mute. The type of mute used in this study is the most common type, a strait mute. A strait mute is simply a flaired, hollow aluminum cone inserted into the bell of a trumpet. The different brands of these mutes come in different shapes, sizes and materials. This study examines the effect of these differences on both the note played and human perception of the sound. More specifically - Do people really hear a difference when different kinds of mutes are used?
Five kinds of mutes were tested:
1 Dennis Wick made of aluminum
2 Jo-Ral made of aluminum
3 Jo-Ral made of aluminum with a copper bottom
4 Mutec made entirely of copper
5 Vincent Bach made of plastic
