THE DOCTOR WHO FANZINE PRESERVATION PROJECT
A project to collect, archive and preserve the many Doctor Who fanzines
and printed periodicals.
I. OBJECTIVE:
The goal of the Doctor Who Fanzine Preservation Project (DW-FPP) is to
collect and archive Doctor Who print materials (especially fan and
semi-professionally produced works) for the purpose of academic preservation and
resource loss-reduction of primary and secondary research materials (due to
their documentation of the series' fiction and production, as well as public/fan
reaction or opinion).
Basically, the Earthbound TimeLords want to make sure that researchers do not
lose the many different Doctor Who fanzines as a source of materials about the
program.
II. OVERVIEW:
Doctor Who, a science fiction television program broadcast on the BBC, is the
longest running science fiction television series of all time. Being such, it
has generated a large amount of interest from science fiction fans and the
public at large. Opinions, reaction, reviews, articles, interviews, parody
works, and other information about the Doctor Who program and its related works
were (and are) often shared in fan-produced materials resembling magazines or
newsletters and usually called "Fanzines" or "'Zines." Many of these fan or
semi-professionally produced materials only had limited print runs or regional
distribution. In many cases, fewer and fewer examples of these works continue to
exist for the use of academic research into Doctor Who (and the show's parent
fields of media studies, sociology, library science and history). Often, these
materials are disposed of after the original owner has no longer found a use for
the items.
The primary goal of the project is to collect as many of these fanzines as
possible to ensure their existence as a research tool, before they are lost
forever.
III. WHAT IS COLLECTED:
The project hopes to house and preserve the most diverse and complete Doctor
Who related fanzine resource library for the use of all. The term "Fanzine" as
defined here generally means magazines and print materials related to the BBC
television show Doctor Who. While the term most often implies unlicensed fan and
semi-professionally produced materials, the DW-FPP also includes professional
and commercial magazines (as well as articles or magazines that simply include a
single article on Doctor Who if the item is felt to be significant). This
interpretation is used to ensure that the greatest amount of information
regarding the program is saved for researchers and authors.
The Doctor Who Fanzine Preservation Project collects the following categories
of Doctor Who related materials:
- MAGAZINES -- Professional (commercial, licensed),
semi-professional, or amateur Doctor Who related printed works and
periodicals.
- FANZINES -- Fiction-work or newsletter style printed works
and periodicals related to Doctor Who, Doctor Who fan clubs, or the actors
from the series.
- NEWSLETTERS -- Newsletters or information mailings from
Doctor Who fan clubs, organizations, or individual contributors.
- FICTION WORKS/COLLECTIONS -- Works or collections of
fiction (novels, novellas, short stories, slash, poetry, filk songs, etc.)
written by fans or professionals with Doctor Who related content.
- ARTWORK COLLECTIONS -- Works or collections of Doctor Who
related artwork, comic strips, cartoons, or other printed artistic works.
- PARODY WORKS -- Printed works (amateur or professional)
that parody Doctor Who in their content.
- CHARITY COLLECTIONS -- Works of research, comment or
fiction related to Doctor Who that are produced with the intention of raising
money for charitable causes or organizations.
- CONVENTION PROGRAMS -- Booklets or programs from
conventions or conferences devoted to Doctor Who or featuring Doctor Who
related guests are collected to archive information about these events and the
activities of Doctor Who related guests and fan organizations.
Other project considerations regarding the works that are collected for the
DW-FPP:
- ALTERNATE VERSIONS -- Fanzine or magazine issues that are
variants of the originals (such as having alternate covers or content) are
also archived.
- REGIONAL DIVERSITY -- Fanzines from all areas of the world
are collected. The project believes that geographical (worldwide) and regional
(domestic) differences lead to different opinions and experiences that are
documented in fanzines and printed works. Foreign language edition
(non-English) fanzines are welcomed and the team often has the resources to
have these works translated when necessary.
- ELECTRONIC NEWSLETTERS -- Electronic or Internet fanzines
or newsletters are archived when possible to ensure their continued existence
as research material. Electronic and Internet materials are often more
difficult (and important) to archive due to the transient nature of the
media.
The list of materials collected is intentionally diverse to include all
possible Doctor Who related works. If an item falls into a separate category
from those described here, it may still be eligible for inclusion in the DW-FPP.
Please contact the Earthbound TimeLords at seidler@msoe.edu if you have any questions.
We would prefer to hear from someone or include an item rather than have it lost
forever to time.
IV. USE OF THE
COLLECTION:
The Doctor Who Fanzine Preservation Project Collection is administered by the
Earthbound TimeLords, academic Doctor Who research organization. The DW-FPP
Collection is a non-lending library created for the use of academic and serious
researchers, authors, and historians. The project exists to help researchers
check references, get articles, or find supporting evidence for their own works.
The Earthbound TimeLord staff will in most cases research the materials for you,
and can in some cases provide photocopies or scans of research materials.
Researchers who may wish to examine the actual materials can often make
arrangements to do so by contacting the Earthbound TimeLords.
Questions related to the research of a particular fanzine or resource should
be directed to Nick Seidler, the primary curator of this project, who can be
contacted at seidler@msoe.edu. The
secondary curator of this project is John Curtis, who can be contacted at jcurtis@bw.edu.
V. HOW TO DONATE OR ASSIST IN THE PROJECT:
Submissions of items (either back or current issues) are welcomed and
encouraged.
Please contact Nick Seidler at seidler@msoe.edu if you wish to donate items
to the Doctor Who Fanzine Preservation Project.
Originals, photocopies, or electronic versions of printed materials are
accepted, though originals are preferred. Use these suggestions as a guide to
the submission of non-original documents:
- Photocopies should include the full content of the page and should be
copied at their original page size if possible.
- Photocopies are best reproduced on white paper (to ensure that all text
and graphics reproduce at the best possible quality available).
- Electronic versions of printed materials are accepted as high resolution
scans in .PDF format (preferred) or as high-resolution .JPG scans.
The project accepts only item (fanzine) donations, and not money of any kind.
Likewise, the project only occasionally purchases fanzines or print materials.
Money spent on behalf of the project is used to pay for postage or to buy
materials needed to properly preserve and archive the DW-FPP collection. Donated
subscriptions to fanzines for the purpose of archiving are welcomed.
While the decision to keep items is juried by the curators, all fanzine and
print items are considered. Due to space and economic considerations, not all
items may be preserved (though the current plan is to do so). In such cases, or
cases of donations of duplicate holdings, an attempt will be made to find other
places of holding (academic libraries, private collections, fans, etc.).
A project goal is to have two copies of each item (one housed at the primary
collection site in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA and a second located near
Cleveland, Ohio, USA). Two sets of materials create a backup of the printed
works and protect the integrity of the collection (from damage, theft, natural
disaster, etc.). The location of these materials was chosen due to the
involvement of the project's primary curators.
The items that are donated to the DW-FPP become the property of the
collection curators, though this is only for legal purposes. The intent of the
collection is to be a resource for all work related to Doctor Who and for the
items to be available to academics, researchers, and authors.
VI. COLLECTION CONTENTS:
The following is a comprehensive list of the holdings of the Doctor Who
Fanzine Preservation Project. Also listed are fanzines that are known to exist
but for which the DW-FPP does not have holdings. These fanzines are listed with
a red "NO ISSUES" tag. The hope is that this section can
also present a comprehensive listing of all Doctor Who related fanzines.
If you have an item not listed here that you wish to donate (either the
original or a photocopy) to the project's collection, please feel free to
contact us at: seidler@msoe.edu. Likewise,
information on fanzines not in this list are welcomed.
Items are listed by the fanzine/magazine title (with additional information
given about the publisher of the item and other relevant data). Individual items
are preceded by a bullet marker and are listed by issue number or date. Other
holdings that are related to a given publication (perhaps produced by the same
publisher) but that do not warrant their own category are included under the
title of the primary publication.
