The ILR at Baldwin-Wallace College
About the ILR ILR Homepage The Institute for Learning in Retirement (ILR) was formed at Baldwin-Wallace College (B-W) in Berea, Ohio in the Winter of 1992 by a group of B-W staff and residents from surrounding communities.   It was formed to be an autonomous organization with its own officers, working committees, by-laws and financial support.   Its objective was to offer senior adults the opportunity to continue learning in an informal, flexible and non-competitive college environment.   There were to be no tests, grades, or homework.   Fees for courses were to be kept at a reasonably low level.   To meet this goal, the ILR is operated on a completely voluntary basis.   From staff to instructors, no one gets paid. The ILR course calendar is set up to offer three quarters per academic year.   The first quarter begins in September, the second in January, and the third in April.   Courses are taught in a pleasant, small college setting.   Homework is not assigned and tests are not given.   Between 18 and 21 courses are presented each quarter.   Membership is not required to participate, however it is encouraged and there are benefits associated with membership, such as priority registration for classes and events.
